Noted golf course architect Ferdinand (Fred) Garbin died Sept. 6 in Pennsylvania after a design career that produced more than 100 layouts.
A member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects for nearly 50 years, and a past president of the organization, Garbin was known for his sensitive remodel work on Donald Ross-designed courses, among other things.
Garbin’s course designs were concentrated in Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia and Ohio, in addition to several projects in the Caribbean.
Courses he designed include Blacksburg Country Club in Blacksburg, Va., Sewickley Heights Golf Club in Sewickley, Pa., Coamo Springs Golf Club in Coamo, Puerto Rico, and The Links at Erie Village in Manilus, N.Y.
