Canadian developers are awaiting approval on a proposed $300 million resort development on Pelee Island in the heart of Lake Erie.
The 1,300-acre, eco-tourism project would include two 18-hole golf courses surrounded by 3,000 residential units and a 600-slip marina.
Developers Pelee Development Interests and Pelee Marine & Land Company plan to carry construction out over a 20-year period. A conference center and village shops would be featured in later phases.
The proposal calls for 40 percent residential development, 30 percent resort development and 30 percent of the acreage to be maintained as open space.
Pelee Island is a 10,000-acre island with just 300 year-round residents. Pelee Island Mayor Rick Masse said a decision on the proposed development could be made prior to the end of the year.
