Members of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects have elected golf course architect Tom Mackenzie as the new president. Mackenzie replaced Peter Fjällman the week of April 13th at the EIGCA’s annual meeting in North Berwick, Scotland. He is the ninth president since the EIGCA formed in 2000.
Mackenzie hails from Dornoch, Scotland, and draws inspiration from famed golf course designer Donald Ross, also from Dornoch. He is a partner in Mackenzie & Ebert Ltd. He is perhaps best known for his designs while at Donald Steel & Company, which include The Abaco Club on Winding Bay in the Bahamas and the Strathtyrum course at St Andrews.
Mackenzie has served on the EIGCA Council for several years and as the chair of the EIGCA’s Environment Committee. He helped establish the Raising the Standard of Sustainable Golf Course Design program, a new major initiative from the EIGCA to educate its members further in sustainable golf development.
“It is a real privilege to be the new President of the EIGCA, but it won’t be easy to follow Peter Fjällman,” Mackenzie said in a news release. “I am delighted that Peter has agreed to stay on the Council for another year to continue the development of our new Five Year Plan. I promise that, over the next two years, I will do all I can to continue to develop the professionalism of the EIGCA for the benefit of its members and the game of golf generally.”
