OB Sports improving Raven at South Mountain

OB Sports Golf Management has taken over management of the Raven Golf Club at South Mountain, and will oversee a wide range of owner-funded improvement projects for the storied course.
“We are all excited to lead the charge with re-establishing the Raven at South Mountain as one of the preeminent resort golf and event venues in the Phoenix/Scottsdale market,” said Mike Conner, Senior Vice President of OB Sports Golf Management. “We have already started rolling up our sleeves and have gotten to work on a number of projects.”
Larry Lippon developed the golf course in 1995, paying $4.5 million for the land and $8 million to build the Gary Panks and David Graham-designed course.
It was later acquired by Intrawest and used as the flagship for their Raven brand. Intrawest then sold the course to CNL, and it had been under a lease with IRI until recently.
CNL’s plan is to have OB Sports oversee the enhancements and then go back to a lease arrangement, said Kris Strauss, vice president of sales & marketing for OB Sports.
The enhancements will include renovation of the bunkers, landscape improvements and specialized tree management, all completed over the next few months. Other agronomic practices will improve the present turf conditions and playability. During the fall overseed closure period, the club will complete improvements to the clubhouse.
“We need to get it back to where it once was at the peak of a very crowded market,” Strauss said. “It is a very popular golf course and is well located. The course is good but we can make it better.”
OB Sports hired Derek Crawford to manage the facility. He was most recently at Sunridge Canyon, and managed We-Ko-Pa Golf Club before that. Jeremy Strauss is the new Head Professional and Mike Reinecke is Raven’s superintendent. Reinecke moves over from TPC Scottsdale.
OB Sports now manages 10 facilities in Arizona and has affiliate marketing agreements with four others. Other OB Sports managed facilities in Arizona include The Golf Club at Chaparral Pines, We-Ko-Pa Golf Club, Talking Rock, Sedona Golf Resort, Palm Valley Golf Club, Eagle Mountain Golf Club, ASU Karsten Golf Course and Longbow Golf Club.
OB Sports also recently took over management at The Club at Victory Ranch, located 17 miles southeast of Park City, Utah. The club, owned by Wells Fargo, was originally only considering third-party management for agronomy, but elected to hire OB Sports for full management.
Lowe Enterprises is the asset manager for the course and 6,000 surrounding acres. The master planned community includes equestrian and other amenities in addition to golf. It has sold 60 lots to date.
The Rees Jones-design is situated atop a plateau and offers views of the Wasatch and Uinta Mountains, Deer Valley Ski Resort, and the Jordanelle Reservoir.

“The quality of the golf and dramatic mountain setting at the Victory Ranch Club provides a truly special and spectacular golf experience,” stated Dave Goff, senior vice president of operations for OB Sports.
