Scotland: Course planned on site of former explosives plant

Developer NPL Estates is proposing to redevelop a 1,700-acre site in Ayrshire that was formerly home to an explosives plant.

The plan will cost £500 million and calls for development of 1,300 homes as well as a golf course, train station, marina and business district. A variety of industrial and sports facilities will also be built if the proposal is approved by the North Ayrshire Council.

NPL Estates has hired the architectural firm Keppie Design to create the blueprint for the yet-to-be-named development.

The project site, which has been closed to the public for nearly 10 years, is the same one where Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor of dynamite, established an explosives factory in 1871.
