Architect Tom Doak and his Renaissance Golf Design firm are currently working on Doak’s first course design in Asia.
Currently known as The Island Club, the course will be located on the rapidly developing Chinese resort island of Hainan, located 20 miles from mainland China and bordered on the west by Vietnam.
Construction is scheduled to begin on the course this fall, for a projected opening at the end of 2010. The course is owned by Han Xiding, owner of the Golf Channel of China, and an admirer of Doak’s minimalist course design philosophy and his emphasis on strategic shotmaking.
The property is being built around the Nandu River on the island, and is located just 200 yards across the river from Hainan’s largest city of Haikou.
