Troon adds Honduras resort; Sequoia launches non-profit; Norman redesigning Florida muni course

Troon Golf will manage Los Micos Beach & Golf Resort, a high-end resort located near Tela Bay in Honduras. Los Micos is the country’s first Gary Player-designed golf course, and is currently under construction. The project, located along the northern coast of the Caribbean, includes more than 1,800 acres of golden sand beaches and diverse wildlife. The golf course along with the entire development is focused on preserving the natural characteristics of the land. The area is ideal for ecotourism with the Punta Sal National Park, Punta Izopo Wildlife Reserve and Lancetilla Botanical Garden all located near Tela Bay. When complete, the project will feature a five-star hotel.

Sequoia Golf launches non profit to give back

Sequoia Golf announced the official launch of its charity arm, the Sequoia Charitable Foundation. The Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization allows Sequoia employees and the community to give back to local organizations through volunteer opportunities and monetary donations.

Since its soft launch in 2011, the Foundation has donated more than $500,000 to charities throughout Georgia and Texas. Fundraising efforts have included hosting several events at Sequoia Golf clubs such as the YMCA’s Community Is Our Cause, Pink the Pro Shop Against Breast Cancer and Patriot Golf Day.

“I’ve always been a firm believer that learning the game of golf is as important for kids as learning a second language,” said Joe Guerra, president and CEO of Sequoia Golf. “Relationships are forged on the golf course like no other place. The virtues of the game and its invaluable lessons are clearly transferable to all aspects of life.”

Braemar Golf gets green

Braemar Golf announced a new commitment to sustainability. It is asking all clients to enroll in the Golf Environment Organization’s OnCourse programme to achieve the international ecolabel for golf — GEO Certified. Additionally, Braemar will help new development projects integrate sustainability into planning, design and construction according to comprehensive new guidance developed by GEO in collaboration with a number of golf industry groups.

“Our project teams have driven this through their efforts and desire to manage their facilities in an environmentally sustainable manner,” said Jonathan Pendry, Golf Courses Director for Braemar Golf. “After discussions with our clients, both in development and operation, there is overwhelming support to ensure that with the guidance provided by GEO we can build and manage golf facilities to the highest environmental standards.”

Norman’s Pompano redesign
Greg Norman met with residents and community leaders of the city of Pompano Beach, Fla. this past week to discuss his redesign of the City’s Pines Golf Course. The project, which will be Norman’s first design at a municipal golf course, is on the fast track and scheduled to be completed and re-opened in November of 2012. Construction is already underway on the first five holes.

“Working with municipalities to help them improve their golf offerings is a great way to help grow the game of golf,” Norman said. The city is hopeful the Norman name and rebranding, will inject new life into the existing course.

Dramatic savings are realized and golf becomes faster, easier, less expensive to maintain. Three years ago,  we performed what we call our “Renovation Advantage” for La Harp Illinois’ Lamoine Valley Golf Course. We renovated their sand greens to SofTrak Commercial. Since then, their play has increased, they are accorded the best greens in the area and here’s the clincher ... they have maintained their 9-hole course with 1 person since
