Troon adds Belfair and Mauna Lani

Belfair, one of the most prestigious private clubs in the U.S., has selected Troon Golf to manage both its 36-hole facility and the community’s property owners association. The Bluffton, South Carolina community is approximately 1,100 acres and is located five miles from Hilton Head Island on Highway 278.

Troon Privé, the company’s private club operations division, will manage the club. Troon Privé manages nearly 70 private clubs, half of which are member owned.

“Belfair is a special place – the golf, the community and the amenities are all world class,” said Bruce Glasco, executive vice president and COO, Troon. “It’s one of the iconic clubs and communities of the East Coast.”

The announcement comes on the heels of Troon’s announcement that it will manage Mauna Lani Resort in Hawaii. With the addition of Mauna Lani, Troon operates 135 golf holes in the Aloha State, including Kapalua Golf in Lahaina, Maui, King Kamehameha Golf Club in Wailuku, Maui, Kahili Golf Course in Wailuku, Maui and Princeville Makai Golf Club in Princeville, Kaua‘i.

Belfair features two championship golf courses designed by Tom Fazio. The West Course opened in 1996 and the East Course opened in 1999. Golfweek Magazine ranks both courses among the “Best Residential Courses” in the United States.

Belfair also includes a golf learning center, a clubhouse and a 9,200 sq. ft. state-of-the-art athletic center which includes two pools, tennis courts, certified personal training, spa services, a dog park and more. The club offers four dining options, including the 1811 Grille, Veranda Dining, The Oaks Dining Room and poolside dining at the athletic center. In addition to the existing amenities, members recently approved the addition of an outdoor dining area and lounge at the existing clubhouse, as well as the construction of a new multi-purpose facility with pools, fitness equipment, a cafe, and meeting space. Construction is expected to begin in early 2018.

“We elected to partner with Troon to accelerate our pace of being the premier choice for buyers in the Lowcountry and to significantly elevate our membership experience,” said Frank Farese, board president, Belfair Property Owners Association. “As the platinum management company in the industry, Troon is perfectly aligned with our vision to be the best.”

Mauna Lani also has two courses, the Francis H. I’i Brown North and South Courses are the centerpieces of the 341-room ocean front luxury resort. Troon will manage all aspects of the golf operations, including agronomy, retail and golf-related sales and marketing following the recent acquisition of the resort, golf courses, spa, and fitness center by DiamondHead Land.

“Troon values the history and traditions of Mauna Lani Golf, beginning with Francis I’i Brown’s vision for the property decades ago,” said Patrick Fitzgerald, partner with DiamondHead Land. “That respect, combined with their global reach and experience operating iconic golf resort properties, makes them a perfect fit to lead Mauna Lani Golf moving forward.

The South Course, a Homer Flint, Raymond Cain and Robin Nelson design, was built on the 16th century Kaniku lava flow snaking through stark, rugged a‘a lava.  A pair of par 3s – the 7th and 15th holes – are Mauna Lani South’s signature holes and are two of the most photographed golf holes in the world. The South Course was home to the Senior Skins Game from 1990 to 2000 and Golfweek magazine rates it as one of the “Best Courses to Play in Hawai‘i.”

The North Course, also a Flint, Cain and Nelson design, opened in 1988 and was built on a lava bed much older than the Kaniku flow. Overlaying the rugged brown pahoehoelava flow, the North features rolling fairways and through kiawe forests.  A 230-acre protected archeological district lies on the northern edge of the North Course, while feral goats roam the course, cropping the grass and providing a unique neutral hazard.
