The first new golf course in Colorado this decade is finally under construction.
Hillside, a local development company, started construction on TPC Colorado in Berthoud, 40 miles north of Denver.
The 18-hole course will be part of a 1,200-unit community called Heron Lakes. The expected cost will be $15 million and Hillside hopes to open in summer 2017.
Depsite the PGA Tour branding, the developers expect to draw mostly a local crowd.
“We think we’re going to be a regional draw,” Emily Kupec, vice president of real estate at Hillside told The Business Den, a local business publication. “We are five minutes from the Boulder County line, and we’re right off Highway 287 and pretty convenient for people residing in Denver and Boulder.”
She said the entire development will take 10 years to complete and will sit on 800 acres. Hillside is still working on financing for other aspects of the project.
Art Schaupeter is the designer. He previously designed a course for the people behind Heron Lakes in Windsor, Colorado — Highland Meadows
Golf Course. The tour is expected to announce a Web.com Tour event at TPC Colorado soon.
The last course to open in Colorado was the Colorado Golf Association’s CommonGround Golf Course in 2009.
