Portugal hotel group acquires Oceanic portfolio

A new European golf organization has taken control of operations of five golf courses in Vilamoura, Portugal, and is exploring how the brand can grow further.

Dom Pedro Hotel Group launched its dedicated golf brand, Dom Pedro Golf, and acquired Group Oceânico’s golf portfolio. This includes the Victoria Course, which hosts the European Tour for the Portugal Masters.

The Irish Examiner reported the sale to be around €70 million (about $91 million).

Dom Pedro Hotel Group has seven hotels in Portugal.

The vision for Dom Pedro Golf is to bring a resurgence to Vilamoura and make it a destination for an elevated golfing experience. It first entered the golf arena in the 1970s with the Dom Pedro Golf Hotel, which helped to make The Algarve region a golf destination.

“We have been in Vilamoura since the beginning,” said Stefano Saviotti, chairman of Dom Pedro Hotels. “I remember it when it was practically nothing, just farmland. It was clear even then this area had significant potential. … I have always been looking for a route back to the golf market in Vilamoura.”

He said bringing together golf and hospitality is a “dream come true.”

The five golf courses in Vilamoura rank among the best experiences in world of golf. The collection is among the most popular in Europe, and includes The Victoria Course, designed by Arnold Palmer and host to 10 European Tour Portugal Masters; The Old Course, heralded as one of the most authentic continental European golf experiences; as well as the Pinhal Club, Laguna Club and Millennium Courses.

Dom Pedro Golf is investing in the clubhouses, courses, facilities and amenities.

Each of the clubs is less than a five-minute transfer from any hotel.
