Jacksonville-area country club abruptly closes

The Orange Park Country Club in northeast Florida unexpectedly closed its golf course, club house and tennis courts the first week of March.

Located in the city of the same name just southwest of Jacksonvile, the private club had some 600 members when it shut its doors, according to a report from Channel 4 News in Jacksonville.

The station reported that the club was bought in April 2018 for $2 million by a James Price. Club members were quoted as saying they believe Price has simply walked away from the course due to the high costs of operating it.

On Tuesday, the Clay County Commissioners voted down a request from the homeowners association to purchase the golf course and run it as a public amenity.

The 382-acre facility first opened in 1990.
