The final design of Thomson Perrett & Lobb (TPL) recently opened near Egypt’s capital of Cairo.
NewGiza, located five miles from the famed Egyptian pyramids (which are visible from portions of the course), is part of a larger development that includes upscale housing, a sports arena, hotels, schools and universities. The 18-hole championship course is built on the site of an old quarry, and features dramatic changes in elevation, water hazards and large undulating greens, with fairways lined by sandy waste areas.
The late Peter Thomson began design work on the project with partners Ross Perrett and Tim Lobb in 2005. Thomson retired from the TPL in 2016 and subsequently died in 2018. Lobb and Perrett now each have their own firms, U.K.-based Lobb + Partners and Australia-based Perrett + Webb.
